Baylor Medical Center at Garland Surpasses National Standard in Wound Care

Multidisciplinary Team Approach Benefits Patients

Baylor Wound & Hyperbaric Medicine Center achieved a 90 percent success rate in treatment of complex wounds, according to James L. Ashbaugh, program director. The national average is 84 percent.

"We are proud of the success of our physicians and clinical staff who work collaboratively to treat problem wounds," says Jim Thaxton, president, Baylor Medical Center at Garland where the center is located.

"By focusing specifically on healing problem wounds, we can be more successful in improving our patient's quality of life," continues Thaxton. Vascular surgeon Trent Proffitt, M.D. is the wound center's medical director.

Many of these wounds result from poor circulation in the legs and feet, frequently caused by diabetes, peripheral vascular disease and congestive heart failure - which, in turn, can be caused by smoking, obesity and a sedentary lifestyle.

The center's specialists use a variety of advanced approaches to treat chronic wounds from specialized dressings to wound debridement to complicated treatments such as hyperbaric oxygen therapy. This therapy involves patient breathing 100 percent oxygen under high atmospheric pressure, allowing red blood cells and blood plasma to carry more oxygen to speed healing.

Baylor Medical Center at Garland, located in the heart of the Garland community, continues to grow and reflect the medical needs of its residents. The hospital offers advanced medical technology in heart and vascular care, neurosurgery, breast health, pain management, wound services, women's services, neonatal intensive care, digestive disease, medical imaging, senior health care, and physical medicine and rehabilitation on its smoke-free campus. Baylor Garland serves the communities of Garland, Wylie, Richardson, Rowlett, Rockwall, Sachse, Mesquite and Murphy.

For fiscal year 2007, Baylor Health Care System will report $390 million in community benefits to the Department of State Health Services.
